TSC Employment Letters. The Teachers Service Commission normally employs teachers, either on internship, contract or permanent terms. Once the teachers are hired, they are deployed to schools to pursue their careers. The commission has now initiated the process of issuance of contract employment letters. The teachers who have been issued with these letters are from the North Eastern region.
The commission opted to issue such letters to teachers despite them having retired. The Teachers Service Commission retirement age for teachers is capped at 60 years. However,, in some cases, those teachers who have retired can be re employed under contract. These teachers had reached their retirement age on May this year.
The commission was forced to recall the retired teachers back into the service under contract terms. This was due to a substantial number of teachers retiring leaving the payroll. The affected counties are Garissa, Mandera and Wajir areas.
The commission CEO indicated that there was a mass retirement of teachers from those regions who had not been replaced. This challenge brought a crisis of few teachers in the region who could not manage the huge workload.
Teacher shortage in North Eastern region
Additionally, it should be noted that these aforementioned regions have been experiencing teacher shortage. This has been brought by mass exodus on non local teachers to their home counties. As a result, the commission opted to engage the local teachers who had retired to come help the situation on contract terms. The teachers have been contracted for a period of 3 years.
In addition to that, all teachers employed in those regions will see their retirement age extended by 3 years. The 3 years will be effective once the teacher attains the mandatory age of 60 years.

On top of that, the commission has also welcomed teachers teachers from other regions who could be willing to work in those regions. This is because the available vacancies cannot be filled by the local teachers.
Retired teachers from the initial mentioned regions have been asked to contact the respective county directors for data collection and deployment thereafter. The commission is also expected to recruit more intern teachers into the region. As the commission keeps recalling the retired teachers, teachers under the internship program are hopeful of absorption into permanent and pensionable terms early next year.
