Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers employed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) are paid according to their job grade, qualifications, years of service and responsibilities.
Under the current salary structure, the monthly basic salary ranges from KSh 27,195 for entry-level teachers to KSh 157,656 for those in the highest administrative grades. In addition to their basic pay, teachers receive several allowances that increase their overall earnings.
Diploma teachers begin their careers at Grade C1, where they earn a basic monthly salary of between KSh 27,195 and KSh 33,994. Graduate teachers are employed at Grade C2, earning between KSh 34,955 and KSh 43,694 per month.
As teachers gain experience and meet the required performance standards, they become eligible for promotions to higher grades with improved salaries.
Teachers in Grade C3 earn between KSh 43,154 and KSh 53,943, while those in Grade C4 receive between KSh 52,308 and KSh 65,385. Senior administrators in Grades C5 to D5 earn between KSh 62,272 and KSh 157,656 before statutory deductions.
Apart from the basic salary, JSS teachers receive several allowances. House allowance varies depending on the teacher’s duty station, with those working in Nairobi receiving the highest rates due to the higher cost of living.
Teachers posted to hardship areas such as Turkana, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Marsabit and parts of Lamu also receive hardship allowances ranging from KSh 8,200 to KSh 38,100 depending on their job grade. In addition, commuter allowance ranges from KSh 4,000 to KSh 16,000 per month to help cover transport costs.
Teachers In Special Schools
Teachers working in special schools and special units qualify for a disability guide allowance of KSh 20,000 every month. They also receive annual leave allowances, which range from KSh 4,000 for teachers in Grade C1 to KSh 10,000 for those in senior grades. These benefits significantly increase a teacher’s total monthly earnings beyond the basic salary.
To qualify for employment as a JSS teacher, applicants must possess a Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Education or a Postgraduate Diploma in Education, have attained a minimum KCSE mean grade of C+, be registered with the Teachers Service Commission and have training in at least two teaching subjects.
Candidates are also expected to have undergone Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) training to effectively teach Junior Secondary learners.
Applications for teaching vacancies are submitted online through the TSC recruitment portal whenever the commission advertises available positions. Applicants are required to complete the online application form, provide their personal and academic details, upload certified documents and submit their applications before the specified deadline.
The current salary structure demonstrates the government’s effort to improve teachers’ remuneration while rewarding experience, qualifications and additional responsibilities. With opportunities for promotion and several allowances, JSS teachers can expect their earnings to increase steadily throughout their careers
