KEMI Recruits “KEMIS Champions” Among Primary and Junior School Teachers to Lead Digital Transformation
NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenya Education Management Institute (KEMI), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, has officially launched an intensive capacity-building program to train classroom teachers on the newly implemented Kenya Education Management Information System (KEMIS).
This initiative marks a major shift in how schools manage data, effectively signaling the transition from the legacy National Education Management Information System (NEMIS) to a more robust, integrated digital framework.
Strengthening the Digital Infrastructure
Since the platform’s official rollout in January 2026, Education Principal Secretary Dr. Julius Bitok has championed KEMIS as a “transformative milestone” for Kenya’s digital landscape.
Unlike the aging NEMIS platform—which was often criticized for being rigid and struggling to interface with other government systems—KEMIS serves as an all-encompassing digital hub.
The new system is designed to unify data across Basic Education, universities, and TVETs, while integrating seamlessly with key agencies such as the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).
This integration ensures a seamless, lifelong record of a learner’s academic journey, perfectly aligning with the tracking requirements of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) model.
The “KEMIS Champion” Initiative
Following the successful training of Headteachers on the management aspects of the platform earlier this year, KEMI is now focusing on the “critical phase” of school-level implementation.
In a circular dated May 29, 2026, KEMI CEO Dr. Maurice Odondo directed all County Directors of Education to facilitate the nomination of a “KEMIS Champion Teacher” from every primary and junior school across the country.
These champions will serve as the primary digital liaisons at their respective institutions, supporting Headteachers in:
Coordinating KEMIS Operations: Managing the day-to-day use of the platform at the school level.
Data Integrity: Ensuring the accuracy of data entry, validation, and regular system updates.
Internal Capacity Building: Acting as the go-to expert to train fellow staff members on the platform’s functionalities.
Criteria for Selection
To ensure the success of this nationwide reform, KEMI has set stringent requirements for the nominated champions. Each school head is tasked with selecting a candidate who possesses:
1) ICT Competency: Proficiency in navigating digital platforms and online systems.
2) Professional Reliability: A demonstrated track record of integrity and careful handling of sensitive institutional data.
3) Availability: The ability to dedicate time to undergo specialized KEMIS Champion training.
4) Strategic Commitment: A genuine interest in advancing data-driven school management.
A Nationwide Call to Action
County and Sub-County Directors of Education have been instructed to mobilize Headteachers to complete the nomination process immediately via the provided official portal.
This move is intended to decentralize the technical burden currently placed on school heads, empowering a dedicated cadre of classroom teachers to lead the digital transformation.
As KEMIS continues to evolve, the creation of this network of champions ensures that the government’s vision of a truly digital education ecosystem—one that is transparent, efficient, and data-driven—is implemented from the classroom level up to the national ministry.
