Primary Interns Cautioned Against Joining JSS Demos. Interns at primary schools have been instructed by the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) not to take part in protests. The protests are led by junior secondary school (JSS) teachers.
This warning follows the notice made nationwide on Monday, April 29th. It was made by the Kenyan Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) announcing a nonviolent protest.
In response to a recent Employment & Labour Relations Court decision regarding the employment status of JSS teachers hired as interns by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), a demonstration has been organized.
KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu stressed the importance of primary teacher interns. He gave priority to their teaching duties in a memo dated April 26, 2024.
Primary Interns Cautioned Against Joining JSS Demos
“We write to remind all union members, especially primary teacher interns, to abstain from taking part in the next JSS demonstrations” , Said Oyuu.
By January 2025, KNUT promised its members, TSC is working hard to ratify them into permanent and pensionable terms.
Oyuu stressed the need of continuity in JSS classes and asked elementary teachers to make sure that learning happens even when JSS teachers are not present.
He stressed the need of primary teachers in bridging the shortage of JSS teachers. As the union continues to fight for the rights and welfare of teachers, KNUT thanked its members for their attention to this issue and urged unity.
