TSC Updated Hardship Areas For Paid Allowances. Teachers receive additional allowances because the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has identified a number of counties and certain areas as hardship areas.
As per the commission’s findings, regions that frequently experience famine, terrorism, or desert weather conditions are classified as hardship areas.
About 38 areas were approved by the commission in 2012 as hardship areas. Teachers were given monthly allowances in these places.
Conditions for an area to be hardship zone
An area must meet certain requirements to be classified as a hardship area. They include;
- Having inadequate transportation and communication infrastructure,
- Shortage of food,
- Being inaccessible,
Additional risks include extremely harsh weather, such as flooding, landslides, and drought, and a lack of basic social services and facilities.
The regions that have been mapped also include those that are insecure and have a high likelihood of security risks.
TSC Updated Hardship Areas For Paid Allowances
Educators employed by the commission at schools situated in specific regions of the aforementioned counties receive a monthly payment for hardship.

TSC administrators in Hardship counties who are currently employed at Job grade D5, sometimes known as Chief Principals, are compensated with the highest monthly allowance of Sh38,100.
