The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has proposed a new career progression structure that will introduce fresh job designations and salary scales for teachers in junior and senior schools.
Under the proposed framework, teachers will be classified into eight levels, from Teacher 8 (ST8) at the entry level to Chief Principal (ST1) at the highest level.
The structure aligns the new designations with existing job grades while maintaining the current salary scales for most categories.
Teachers currently in grade C1 will be placed under Teacher 8 (ST8) and earn between KSh29,787 and KSh37,234. Those in grade C2 will move to Teacher 7 (ST7) with salaries ranging from KSh38,286 to KSh47,858.
The proposal combines grades C3 and C4 under Teacher 6 (ST6). Teachers in this category will earn between KSh52,308 and KSh68,857, using the current C4 salary scale. Senior Teachers under ST5, equivalent to grade C5, will earn between KSh62,272 and KSh79,651.
At the management level, grades D1 and D2 will be merged under Deputy Principal (ST4). Teachers in this category will receive salaries ranging from KSh92,496 to KSh112,633, based on the current D2 pay structure.
Principals classified under ST3, which corresponds to grade D3, will earn between KSh106,043 and KSh129,463. Senior Principals under ST2, equivalent to grade D4, will take home between KSh118,242 and KSh146,286.
At the top of the hierarchy, Chief Principals under ST1, corresponding to grade D5, will earn between KSh131,380 and KSh162,539
The proposed framework will apply to both Regular and Special Needs Education (SNE) teachers. If implemented, the changes will streamline teacher grading while providing a clearer career progression pathway across the education sector.
