The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has initiated the promotion process for Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers across Kenya.
As of April 2025, TSC began issuing promotion letters to teachers who successfully participated in the January promotion interviews.
These promotions are part of a broader effort to address teacher shortages and enhance career progression within the education sector .
In addition to promotions, TSC has been deploying teachers to JSS positions to support the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
This includes the deployment of P1 teachers who have upgraded their qualifications, as well as secondary school teachers, to fill vacancies in grades 7 to 9 .
However, challenges remain. Approximately 20,000 primary school headteachers awaiting promotion to JSS principal positions have experienced delays due to the need for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for the 2025–2029 cycle, which has yet to be finalized
To address these issues, the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has been in discussions with TSC.
They have agreed on plans to hire 20,000 additional JSS teachers and promote over 30,000 others, starting from June 2025, contingent upon securing the necessary funding from Parliament.
