A total of 39,550 junior secondary school (JSS) teachers who were confirmed to permanent and pensionable (pnp) terms in January 2025 have now been given union membership.
TSC has added the teachers to Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) membership beginning February 2025.
The TSC February payslips shows the teachers have been deducted the Kuppet union dues sh. 890/-confirming their membership.
The inclusion of 39,550 JSS teachers is a boost to Kuppet which was struggling with dwindling membership.
The JSS teachers have however been pushing to have their own union Kenya Junior School Teachers Association (KEJUSTA).
Yesterday the union issued a statement after Mr. Vincent Onyancha was slapped and kicked by his headteacher in front of his students
The Nyamira teacher who is recuperating in hospital in Ikonge is said to be assaulted by the school Principal for allegedly being late.
KEJUSTA want investigations be done on the incident and demand action against headteachers mistreating JSS teachers.
Kuppet has stood with the teachers when they were working on internship terms and were advocating for their confirmation to pnp terms.
In August 2024 Kuppet joined the then striking JSS intern teachers on the streets calling for their immediate confirmation.
Though the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) has been wooing the teachers to join it they outright rejected the outfit saying they are not primary school teachers.
Kuppet is reorganizing to have JSS officials who will help in addressing problems facing their colleagues while working in a primary school environment.
