The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has officially published the approved subject combinations for secondary school teacher training in Kenya, a move that directly affects graduates’ eligibility for employment and career progression in the education sector.
According to the TSC, selecting a combination that aligns with the approved list is crucial for teacher trainees, as pursuing courses outside these combinations could render them ineligible for recruitment in public secondary schools, regardless of training completion.
The approved combinations cover a wide spectrum of disciplines, including Science, Languages, Mathematics, Technical subjects, and Humanities. Science combinations include options such as Chemistry and Biology, Chemistry and Physics, Biology and Geography, Agriculture paired with Geography, Biology or Chemistry, as well as Home Science and Biology, and Physics with Computer Studies. These combinations ensure that prospective teachers are well-prepared to deliver specialized knowledge in core scientific fields.
LANGUAGE COMBINATIONS
Language combinations also feature prominently, with English paired with Literature, Kiswahili combined with CRE, History, Geography, IRE, Home Science, or Physical Education, and foreign languages such as German, French, or Arabic paired with Geography, History, Business Studies, or religious studies.
MATHEMATICS COMBINATIONS
Mathematics combinations include Mathematics with Business Studies, Geography, Computer, Chemistry, Biology, or Physics. Technical subjects allow combinations like Metal Work or Woodwork with Mathematics or Physics, Electricity paired with Mathematics or Physics, and Art-related combinations with History, Geography, or Design.
HUMANITIES COMBINATIONS
For Humanities, TSC has approved combinations including Geography and CRE, History and CRE, Geography and History, Geography with IRE, History with IRE, and options linking Home Science, Special Needs Education, Music, and Physical Education. This ensures a broad and balanced approach to teaching competencies in the arts, humanities, and social sciences.
The TSC emphasized that training for secondary school teachers must adhere strictly to the syllabi and course guidelines issued by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) and that oversight from the Ministry of Education’s quality assurance department helps maintain national standards across training institutions.
Graduates and students planning to pursue a teaching career are advised to confirm their subject combinations align with TSC-approved lists before applying for jobs or placements through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).
KUCCPS REQUIREMENTS FOR BED COURSES
KUCCPS has also outlined specific subject requirements for students pursuing Bachelor of Education degrees. Most Education courses require a minimum grade of C+ (Plus) in core subjects, with each subject only counted once within a combination cluster. Science-based degrees mandate Mathematics Alternative A, while language or arts-focused education degrees require strong performance in the specific subject, such as French, German, or Music.
By publishing the official list of approved subject combinations, TSC ensures that Kenya’s secondary school teachers are adequately trained, qualified, and aligned with national education standards, helping safeguard both the quality of education and career opportunities for teachers across the country.
