TSC Renewal Of Intern Teachers Contracts. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has started to invite intern teachers whose contracts expire in September to extend their internship, following a few days of postponing their confirmation.
This suggests that the intern instructors will labor for a lengthier duration than what was first specified in the internship agreement.
Several County Directors, including Baringo, Tana River, and Nandi, have already texted headteachers, requesting that they align their teachers in order to extend the contract.
TSC has employed 46,000 instructors, all of them are interns. 21,550 junior school and 4,000 elementary school intern educators were hired in February 2023.
In April 2023, 450 intern instructors for secondary schools were hired. In September 2023, 18,000 junior school and 2,000 primary school intern instructors were hired.
Despite the fact that President William Ruto signed the Supplementary Appropriations (No. 2) Bill 2024, which made it possible for the teachers to be confirmed, TSC claims that the funding allotted is insufficient to do so this year.

The Commission claims that this amount falls short of the Sh30 billion that it will require to pay the intern teachers under the new terms, starting in July 2025 and continuing for a full year.
According to TSC, the interns can only be supported for a total of six months using the Sh18.7 billion allocated for the conversion.
The Commission decided to postpone the 46,000 intern teachers’ confirmation to permanent positions until January 2025 due to a budget deficit.
In order to provide for new pay in January, TSC will provide the intern teachers with permanent and pensionable (PNP) letters in December.
KNUT And KUPPET Strike Threat
Kuppet and Knut oppose delaying the confirmation of intern teachers. In a combined statement, the two unions threatened to go on strike unless the teachers switched to the PNP on July 1.
The statement stated, “The unions demand the immediate confirmation to all current intern teachers of their employment on permanent and pensionable terms effective 1 July 2024, as well as the remittance of their full salaries for the month which are currently in arrears.”
In the event that TSC doesn’t accede to their requests, they have vowed to launch a statewide strike that would start on August 26.
A monthly salary of sh 20,000 for junior school intern teachers and sh 15,000 for elementary school intern teachers is now paid to the intern instructors.
However, due to deductions for things like the housing fund, NSSF, and NHIF, teachers’ monthly pay is reduced by about sh 3,000.
P1 Permanent Teachers Salary
Following confirmation, P1 instructors will begin working in job group B5, where their base pay would range from a minimum of Sh 21,756 to a maximum of Sh 27,195 after three years of service.
Teachers will receive a yearly payment in January of sh 4,000 for leave allowance and sh 4,000 for commuter allowance
With the exception of people who reside in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Nyeri, Eldoret, Thika, Kisii, and Kitale, major municipalities, and other former minor municipalities, they will be eligible to a house allowance of sh 3,200 per month.
The hardship allowance for workers in areas of hardship is sh 6,600. Additionally, the teachers will have full medical coverage, which will be funded by their monthly medical stipend.
When the teachers have worked for three years, they will automatically be promoted to job group C1.
Starting with job group C2, which is the entrance level for graduate teachers, the junior school intern instructors will be employed.
After three years of service, the teachers will receive a wage that starts at sh 34,955 and goes up to sh 43,694.
A yearly leave payout of sh 6,000 and a commuting allowance of sh 5,000 will be given to teachers.

For workers in hard-hit areas, the hardship allowance is sh 10,900. The instructors’ monthly medical payment will also cover the whole cost of their health insurance.
The teachers will automatically be promoted to job group C3 after three years of employment.
