TSC Changes Tune On When It Will Confirm Senior Interns. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will confirm more than 25,000 intern teachers working in junior and primary schools into permanent, pensionable positions.
This is what the Honorable Ndindi Nyoro, the Chairman of the Budget and Appropriations Committee, stated last week. He said this in Parliament during the presentation of the government budget’s appropriations for 2024–2025.
Only the teachers who extended their internship contracts earlier this year will be confirmed.
This implies that people who were recruited in February 2023 and are presently employed by other institutions will receive precedence when the confirmation process starts.
Degree-holding intern graduate instructors will be assigned to job group C2, while their PTE-certified counterparts will begin in grade B5.
Money to verify the teachers was considered in the 2024–2025 budget as the funds were being issued.

Additionally, Ndindi Nyoro announced plans to hire 20,000 more intern teachers this year.
This statement comes after TSC Chief Executive Dr. Nancy Macharia recently declared that in order to fill staffing shortages in junior schools, TSC will begin hiring at least 20,000 additional intern teachers.
In a media appearance, Macharia acknowledged that there is a chronic teacher shortage in the majority of junior secondary schools.
Macharia claims that there is a 99,045 teacher shortage compared to the 56,928 teachers that were recently hired.
Following the revelation that primary schools have 18,194 more teachers than needed, TSC has declared that 6000 spots are currently available for the deployment of P1 instructors to junior school.
This comes after the new curriculum was implemented and the number of classes was lowered by two.
The deadline for primary teachers who hold secondary choice degrees and a C+ in both KCSE and two subjects of instruction was March 18, 2024, for their application to be deployed was March 18.
TSC promised intern instructors last year that if they extended their contract, it would secure their employment on a permanent basis.
Initially, it was thought that confirmation would come this July as that’s when the budget will be read. However, it has been decided that the intern teachers must finish the two years before being confirmed. Therefore, confirmation will be in January 2025.
