New List Of Grade 10 Learning Areas Given By KICD. When the CBC Pioneer class transfers to senior school, the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) offers learning areas for grade 10.
For Grade 10 in Senior School, KICD recommended 40 subjects; the student chooses just seven of these. The KICD curriculum design states that students in Grade 10 would have access to 40 study areas.
The student only needs to choose seven from that huge pool, though. The first grade of Senior School (SS), which consists of three grades, will be grade 10. In 2026, the first grade 10 class will start.
Compulsory subjects
Notably, all students will be required to complete four necessary subjects:

“At this level, students will study seven learning areas (LAs) as specified by the Presidential Working Party on Educational Reforms (PWPER).
These shall comprise four required learning areas and three learning areas chosen by the learner based on their chosen Pathway,” states the curriculum design in part.
The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum will include 17 courses for students to choose from.

Social science pathway
Similarly, the KICD described the subjects available through the Social Science Pathway.
These include Advanced
English
English Literature
Indigenous Language
Kiswahili Kipevu/Kenya Sign Language
Fasihi ya Kiswahili
Arabic, French
German
Mandarin Chinese.
History and Citizenship, Geography, Christian Religious Education/Islamic Religious Education/Hindu Religious Education, and Business Studies are all part of the Social Science area.
Art and sports
Finally, the remaining subjects belong under Arts and Sports Science, which includes disciplines like:-
Sports and Recreation
Physical Education,
Music and Dance,
Theatre and Film
Fine Arts.
“While English and Kiswahili are stated as required, students who choose these learning areas as their topics of specialty will follow a diversified curriculum in terms of breadth, experiences, and evaluation.
Consequently, these students need to enroll in Advanced English or Kiswahili Kipevu in addition to the two mandatory programs. “It is advised that the selected pathway be the source of at least two learning areas.
Based on their professional objectives and with the support of the Senior School principals, certain learners may, in extraordinary circumstances, select one learning area from the selected Pathway and a maximum of two learning areas from any of the three routes,” the curriculum design adds.
It has been suggested that stakeholders offer input on the suggested subjects and curriculum framework.
