Grade 10 learners pursuing science-related careers under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum can access thousands of senior schools across the country offering the Core Mathematics, Biology, and Chemistry subject combination.
The combination falls under the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) pathway.
STEM is considered one of the key subject clusters for learners aspiring to join medical, engineering, research and other science-related professions.
The Ministry of Education has approved more than 2,800 senior schools to offer the combination following vetting and audits ahead of full implementation of the senior school phase of CBE.
The schools span all categories, including national, extra-county, county, and sub-county institutions.
STEM Pathway Expands Opportunities for Learners
Under the CBE framework, the Mathematics, Biology, and Chemistry cluster is offered under the STEM pathway.
According to the Ministry of Education guidelines, Grade 10 learners take seven subjects. Four subjects are compulsory: English, Kiswahili or Kenyan Sign Language, Mathematics, and Community Service Learning.
Three subjects are then selected based on the learner’s preferred pathway and career aspirations. STEM learners must take Core Mathematics alongside other selected science and technical subjects.
Learners taking the cluster can pursue fields such as medicine, pharmacy, nursing, biomedical engineering, environmental science, genetics, biotechnology, food science, research, geology and forensic science, among many others.

Several top-performing national schools are among institutions approved to offer the Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry combination. These include Alliance High School, Mang’u High School, Maseno School, Nairobi School, Lenana School, Kapsabet High School, Machakos Girls High School, The Kenya High School and Alliance Girls’ High School.
Other leading institutions listed among schools offering the combinations include St Mary’s Kibabii High School, Kangaru School, Lugulu Girls High School, Nyakach Girls High School, Chuka Girls High School, Mua Hills Girls Secondary School and Moi Forces Academy.
The approved list also includes cluster 2 schools such as St Joseph’s Githunguri, Igembe Boys, Teremi High School, S.A. Kolanya Boys High School, and Chebilat High School.
