Twenty teachers with Board of Management (BOM) contracts were let go from Butere Girls High School because of a lower workload anticipated for the upcoming school year.
Since there won’t be any Form One students starting in January of next year, the principal of the school clarified in a letter dated October 25, 2024, that the decision was also impacted by projected funding cuts.
“This is to bring to your attention that it has been decided that the contracts of all teachers employed on BOM terms be terminated with effect from November 1, 2024, in light of the reduced workload and expected decline in funds caused by the absence of form one students in 2025,” the principal said.
The Butere girls school management further directed affected BOM teachers to complete their clearance from the institution by November 31, 2024.
Located in Kakamega County, Butere Sub-County, in Marama Central Location, Butere Girls’ High School is one of the oldest institutions in Western Province. It was established in 1912 by the Church Missionary Society (CMS) as part of their work in Northern Kavirondo.
BOM teachers nationwide face similar challenges, as many schools anticipate fewer streams, reducing available workload.
On the internet some netizens argued that all is not lost for such teachers because the government will advertise internship vacancies in Junior school.
