The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has announced that invigilators, supervisors and other support personnel involved in the 2025 national examinations will begin receiving their payments on Thursday, August 6. However, the examination body has began paying them today.
KNEC Chief Executive Officer David Njengere confirmed the payment timeline as concerns continued over delays affecting examination officials.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 4, Basic Education Principal Secretary John Ololtuaa said that the Ministry of Education had already released funds to KNEC to facilitate the payments.
“I informed the Committee that the Ministry has already disbursed the funds to the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), and payments to examination personnel will commence on Thursday, 6th August 2026” the statement read.
The PS made the announcement while appearing before the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Education, where one of the key matters discussed was the pending payments owed to personnel who supported the administration of Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA), Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) examinations.
The update comes amid concerns from teachers’ unions over delayed payments, with some examination personnel still awaiting their allowances ahead of the 2026 national examination cycle.
The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has repeatedly warned that teachers would boycott the administration of this year’s examinations unless outstanding dues are cleared.
While some examiners confirmed receiving their payments, KUPPET said thousands of teachers who participated in last year’s examination process have not received their payments despite Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi confirming the disbursement of funds a month ago.
The union had claimed that KNEC required an additional Ksh4 billion to fully settle the outstanding payments owed to examination officials.
Despite the update, some teachers online expressed doubts over the announcement, saying similar assurances have been issued for more than six months without resolution.
Others said they would only be convinced after receiving official payment confirmation messages.
With national examinations only months away, tensions persist as teachers await confirmation that KNEC will fulfil the payment commitment.
