Intern Teachers Strike Notice. Teachers working under the internship program have vowed to down their tools come January 2024 when schools reopen for the first term. The frustrated teachers have made their intentions clear early enough. The teachers say that they can only report to schools in January if they are confirmed into permanent and pensionable terms.
The most affected group is the senior interns who were employed by TSC in February this year. They signed their internship contracts . The contracts indicated clearly that it would run for one year and will be non renewable. Thereafter, confirmation into permanent terms would follow.
However, the commission has said otherwise recently that it would renew their contracts. This has not been welcomed by the intern teachers.
The intern teachers have persevered working in the primary school set up for a whole year. The narrative from the government on renewal of contracts has shocked all and sundry. The intern teachers have felt they have been shortchanged and their agreement canceled. This has led them to announce a looming strike that will paralyze learning and implementation of CBC.
Demands of intern teachers to the government.
During a press conference in Homabay county last week, the intern teachers made their demands known to the government. They asked the government to domicile junior schools in existing secondary schools. In addition to that, they asked the government to honor it’s promise and confirm the senior interns into permanent and pensionable term once the contract ends.
Additionally, in the Homabay press conference, the teachers expressed the huge workload they are handling in the junior schools. On top of that, the working environment is highly unfavorable.

The Kenya union of post primary teachers has expressed fears on how the junior school teachers are being overworked. Most teachers are forced to teach areas they have not been trained for, hence making content delivery a huge task. In addition, there are no laboratories where experiments should be done.
Sam Opondo, the Siaya District executive secretary gave scenarios where jss teachers are forced to teach lower primary school learners.
There have been concerns across on how TSC is doing it’s recruitment. A number of recent graduates have been employed into permanent terms while several interns are still suffering. In regards to that, the interns have decided they will go on strike if they are not confirmed into permanent and pensionable terms
