One of the most esteemed occupations in Kenya is still teaching. For many educators, financial planning requires an awareness of their pay scale and benefits.
The most recent Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) 2025 to 2029 is reflected in the improved pay scales and benefits for Grade C2 teachers under the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) in 2026.
A bachelor’s degree in education or a similar degree with teaching credentials is often required for grade C2, which is the entry level grade for secondary school teachers with university training.
Teachers in this grade are frequently referred to as Senior Teacher II or Secondary Teacher II. Depending on performance and experience, there are chances for promotion to C3, C4, and higher grades.
TSC Pay Structure
Under the latest TSC pay structure, the monthly basic salary for Grade C2 teachers ranges between KES 41,420 to KES 57,230. This is the base pay before allowances and reflects the TSC’s efforts to adjust teacher salaries in line with inflation and living costs.
Grade C2 teachers receive several monthly and annual allowances in addition to their basic salary. Housing allowances vary by location: Nairobi pays KES 16,500, major towns like Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret, Nyeri, Thika, Kisii, Malindi, and Kitale pay KES 12,800, other former municipalities pay KES 9,600, and rural areas receive KES 7,500.
All teachers receive a commuter allowance of KES 5,000 per month. Those posted in designated hard to reach areas receive a hardship allowance of KES 10,900 per month.
Teachers supporting learners with special needs are eligible for a disability guide allowance of KES 20,000 per month, while an annual leave allowance of KES 6,000 is paid once a year.
A teacher’s total earnings are the sum of basic salary and allowances. For example, a Grade C2 teacher posted in Nairobi with hardship status could earn over KES 80,000 per month.
Teachers move through incremental steps annually based on years of service and performance, with annual increments typically ranging between KES 1,000 and KES 6,000.
After several years, they may qualify for promotion to C3, earning higher pay and taking on leadership responsibilities.
The updated salary and allowances make the teaching profession more financially sustainable.
Teachers’ total earnings now better reflect living costs, especially in urban centers. Grade C2 teachers also have clear career progression opportunities through the TSC grading system.

which area in Nairobi has hardship allowance? Some reasoning.
