JSS Schools To Have Two Deputies. Plans presented by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) state that headteachers at elementary schools that will house junior secondary schools starting in the forthcoming academic year will be promoted.
In accordance with the concept, 400,000 teachers will also be assigned to serve in primary and junior school divisions, which would eventually become comprehensive schools.
Under this new setup, current deputy headteachers at these schools will become deputy principals. These entities will be supervised by two deputies.
For both principals and deputies, a bachelor’s degree in any field relevant to education will be necessary.
To be eligible for promotion to principle and deputy principal positions, headteachers and deputies currently holding such positions must possess a minimum of a diploma.

These headteachers and deputies will teach in junior schools, which are currently facing a teacher shortage.
Headteachers will be promoted to the next job group, moving from job group C5 to D1, and senior headteachers in job group D1 will be promoted to D2.
Their promotion will continue progressively until they reach job group D5, similar to the principals of secondary schools and teacher training colleges (TTCs).
TSC has already requested additional data for headteachers and their deputies via an excel template to begin this process.
The principal will be a signatory to all school bank accounts, covering pre-primary, primary, and junior schools (comprehensive school).
The Commission intends to promote 12,000 teachers in this fiscal year, allocating 3,000 posts to secondary schools and 9,000 to basic and junior schools.
This month, TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia disclosed that 36,504 educators were promoted during the fiscal year 2023–2024. She emphasized that as a result, there have been 71,212 teacher advancements during the previous five years.
Macharia claims that in order to promote more teachers, the government has allocated Sh1 billion for the 2024–2025 fiscal year.
TSC now employs over 223,296 instructors in primary schools, with plans to add 120,923 more for junior secondary schools.
The total number of teachers employed in elementary and secondary school is currently 347,000.
