Confirmation Of Interns To PnP Terms. TSC Chief Executive Officer Ms. Nancy Macharia revealed that the commission plans to change 46,000 contract teachers’ employment status from temporary to permanent posts with pensions after two years.
Due to a shortage of funding, the contracts of the 46,000 intern teachers hired the previous year were extended in January for a further year. Of these, 21,500 interns were assigned to JSS.
The interns affirmed their credentials and TSC registration while expressing dissatisfaction with the extension arrangement. They don’t like that they are treated like trainees at a college who get stipends instead of wages.
Ms. Macharia reaffirmed the commission’s resolve to address the matter and promised that these teachers would be given top consideration when schools need to fill positions. She also mentioned that they would automatically place candidates without advertising for the positions as part of their hiring procedure.
By establishing a clear path for the intern teachers, this action seeks to maintain work continuity and facilitate their transition to permanent, pensionable employment by 2025.
Their contracts have been extended to enable the appropriate administrative actions to be done in accordance with the commission’s financial limitations.
Confirmation Of Interns To PnP Terms
Secondary school teachers on contract under the internship program get Sh20,000 per month, while their elementary school counterparts get Sh15,000.
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers opposed the extension of intern contracts, voicing concerns over the length of the internship period through secretary-general Akelo Misori. According to KUPPET, this demotivates educators who already struggle with difficult working conditions and little pay.
