Intern Teachers To Receive Completion Certificates. 46,000 teachers who are now employed under internship contracts will receive internship certificates from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
The recent four-month extension of the interns’ contracts and this decision are related. Forms to prolong their internship have already been filled out by those whose contracts expired on August 31.
Formerly, upon completion of their internships, intern teachers were immediately promoted to permanent and pensionable (PNP) employment.
TSC representatives have stated that instructors will get certificates at the conclusion of their term rather than automatically becoming PNPs.
The job opportunities will be publicized by TSC, and intern instructors will be required to apply and appear for interviews with other candidates.
However, these teachers will have an advantage in the hiring process because of the extra points they will receive for their internship certifications.
Last month, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announced that Ksh 18.7 billion had been allocated for confirming the 46,000 intern teachers. He also noted that Ksh 13.5 billion had been set aside for the implementation of phase 2 of the teachers’ Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
Intern Teachers To Receive Completion Certificates
“I am pleased to announce the release of Ksh 18.7 billion for hiring intern teachers and 13.5 billion for implementing the CBA on salary increments. We are committed to improving education standards and ensuring our teachers are well compensated,” said Ogamba.
TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia stated that the confirmation of intern teachers has been postponed until January 2025 due to insufficient funds.
TSC needs Ksh 30 billion to fund the teachers under the new terms for a full year, till the next budget allocation in July 2025. The Ksh 18.7 billion given for this reason can only cover payments for six months.
As of right now, TSC has 46,000 teachers on internship terms. Of these, 21,550 interns from junior high and 4,000 from primary school were hired in February 2023, 450 from secondary school in April 2023, and an additional 18,000 from junior high and 2,000 from primary school were hired in September 2023.
In October 2024, TSC also intends to hire 20,000 additional intern teachers, of which 18,000 will work in junior secondary schools and 2,000 in primary schools.
