TSC Changes On Recruitment Of P1 Teachers. It is a sigh of relief following TSC change of plan that will see employment of p1 teachers who are certificate holders including those who have not upgraded.
According to the commission, this move is to ensure inclusivity and non-discrimination and as a result teachers with P1 certificates who have not pursued the upgrade to a diploma qualification will get jobs.
However, TSC has insisted that after employing the P1 teachers, the teachers will be taken through a comprehensive retooling programme meant to enable them to effectively implement CBC curriculum.
Earlier, the Teachers Service Commission had raised concerns over the fate of P1 teachers / the certificate holders after a proposal was given to scrap the certificates
TSC had indicated that TSC certificates will be scrapped and it will have the lowest cadre of teachers be a Diploma holders under the teaching profession.
Just before the above proposal, an individual qualified to go for a P1 teaching certificate Incase they had scored a D plain.

Despite the above proposal that had raised concerns , the commission has now said that the P1 teachers still have a chance to be in classrooms provided that they undergo retooling.
TSC has reviewed its proposal following Senators concern indicating that some teachers might not pursue the required diploma course following the current high tuition fees charged by colleges.
The equally declined the practicum requirements as well as the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) assessment fees.
TSC has now said that retooling of all the P1 teachers is now necessary after introducing the new competence Based curriculum.
As a result , it is now necessary that all P1 teachers get trained on the new pedagogical skills so as to be able to effectively implement the new curriculum and disseminate knowledge to learners.
TSC has further announced that there will be an elaborate and comprehensive programme for P1 teachers who are employed by the Commission so as to be retooled on the new pedagogical skills .
As a result, the P1 teachers who graduated before 2019 and are not employed by the Commission had started a 9-month upgrading programme since in 2019 so as to enhance their P1 Certificates to a Diploma Level.
TSC has also said that it will give teachers who currently hold P1 certificates and those who have upgraded equal employment opportunity as an employer that abides by the tenets of the law.
The teachers are set to be employed before the end of the year. This is as a result of several teachers exiting the service through retirement.A total of 5073 teachers will be hired to replace them.

Those of us who had the P1 and went back to upgrade so that we can handle the JSS why are we neglected? How and when will we be absorbed by the TSC?
