Senior Secondary Schools To Be Categorized Into 3. The long-standing national schools designation will come to an end with the reclassification of over 10,000 secondary schools in Kenya.
This program marks the beginning of a new three-tier structure. The structure will be deployed in tandem with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
Eighteen months remaining before the first CBC cohort, currently in Grade 8, moves up to senior secondary school in 2026. Planning is under way about them.
The Ministry of Education has initiated the process of school mapping, envisaged to conclude by next year.
Principal Secretary for Basic Education, Belio Kipsang, disclosed on Wednesday the replacement of traditional school categories with three novel ones:
- Science,
- Technology,
- Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Centres,
- Humanities and Arts Schools, and
- Creative Arts and Sports Schools.
Nonetheless, it is expected that schools would provide a combination of these tracks. This will help students choose from a wider range of courses.

At this week’s Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, education stakeholders are debating the approaching senior school transition. The details of these adjustments have not yet been determined.
Dr. Kipsang declared, “We won’t allow this time around…to go through sleepless nights like what happened in JS (Junior Secondary).”
The changes will also apply to tests given at the conclusion of Grade 9, which will determine a student’s placement in the new categories.
In addition to classroom assessments, students will take a written test that is similar to the KCPE that will direct them into a senior school track.
Kipsang clarified, “Let’s remember that the assessment is not for placement but for pathways as we reflect on Grade 9 and the type of assessment we will have.”
Although the test is important, Kipsang claimed it would do away with the admissions process based on merit.
However, stakeholders at KICD will discuss the specifics of how the final score will be calculated.
He emphasized, “We have to think about how we conduct the assessment, how much of it will be formative and summative. In addition, how much of it will go toward the Grade 9 assessment, and how it will affect our children’s placement.”
