Machakos County – Four students have been injured while several others are reported missing after a fire swept through four dormitories at Matungulu Boys’ School in Machakos County.
The blaze, which broke out in the early hours, quickly engulfed the dormitories, forcing students to flee in panic.
Eyewitnesses said the fire spread rapidly, leaving many students stranded and some unaccounted for. Emergency services rushed to the scene to control the flames and evacuate the students.
Those who sustained injuries were taken to nearby health facilities for treatment, while rescue teams continue to search for the missing students.
The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, with authorities launching a full investigation.
Community leaders and parents have expressed shock and concern over the incident, urging school management and county officials to provide immediate support to the affected students and families.

“This is a tragic day for our school and community,” said one parent. “We hope the missing students are found safe and that those injured recover quickly. We also call for urgent measures to prevent such incidents in the future.”
The fire has raised questions about the adequacy of fire safety measures in boarding schools, particularly in dormitory facilities. Safety experts stress the importance of fire drills, smoke detectors, and accessible firefighting equipment to prevent similar tragedies.
Authorities have asked anyone with information regarding the missing students to come forward to assist with rescue efforts. Meanwhile, the community has rallied to provide temporary shelter and support for the displaced students.
