TSC Scrapped And Newly Gazetted Hardship Areas. TSC hardship areas are regions in Kenya that experience extreme difficulties, including inadequate infrastructure, living conditions, and accessibility.
Basic facilities like power, clean water, and healthcare are often hard to come by in these locations.
Teaching is a noble job in which teachers shape future careers as well as responsible individuals who can live in today’s fast-paced society.
In government-run elementary and secondary schools, the hiring, compensation, and disciplinary actions of teachers are supervised by the Teachers Service Commission.
However, certain teachers may be sent to areas that the TSC has deemed to be challenging and hardship areas.
Kenyan teachers who work in these underdeveloped areas are usually paid an additional stipend called a hardship payment. A teacher’s hardship stipend in Kenya is set and determined by their job group, regardless of the hardship region they work in.
Places where terrorism, famine, or extreme weather are likely to occur have been designated as hardship regions by TSC.Teachers employed in schools located in specific TSC-designated hardship areas receive a monthly hardship allowance;
- Mandera County
- Marsabit County
- Kwale County
- Garissa County
- Wajir County
- West Pokot County
- Narok County
- Turkana County
- Kilifi County
- Isiolo County
- Lamu County

However, according to the TSC circular , TSC is reviewing and listing some areas in counties as hardship areas. Teachers working in these regions enjoy Hardship Allowances.
With effect from 1/12/2020, TSC seized payment of hardship allowance in the following sub-counties:
- Nyandarua – All sub-counties
- Kigumo sub-county
- Murang’a sub-county
- Kandara sub-county
- Nyahururu sub-county
The Hardship allowance rates however vary. They vary depending with the job group the teacher is. Teachers in higher job grades in Hardship areas pocket a good amount of money as compared to those in lower job groups.
