TSC Announces Review Of Allowances For Teachers. The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) has requested that the national government, through the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), raise teachers’ allowances. This is in areas where they are experiencing hardship.
KNUT union officials claim that these teachers work in hazardous environments in areas that are currently vulnerable to banditry. This consequently instills a continual concern for their safety.
The social and economic standing of these instructors needs to be improved as they provide service in underprivileged areas. This is as stated by Knut National Vice Chairperson Joseph Malel.
Malel bemoaned the recent bandit-inflicted deaths of teachers in Baringo and Samburu counties. He called on the government to act quickly to place additional National Police Reservists (NPRs) at schools. This should be done in schools situated in areas vulnerable to banditry.

Malel emphasized again the need to designate these places as disturbed, and that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) should assign sufficient instructors to these areas. This is in order to improve student education and provide them with more allowances.
Concerns were also expressed over the poor facilities in many schools. This forces instructors and students to rely on temporary facilities at market centers.
These amenities include a shortage of staff rooms, staff quarters, and electricity. The union opposed the new 2024 bill on the grounds that it is punitive and does not take into account the interests of teachers.
They expressed worries about the recently hired intern teachers, pointing out that TSC has not provided them with adequate permanent and pensionable terms to improve their welfare.
